As District 65 grapples with allocating its resources to fit a new paradigm, join historian Kris Hartzell for a timely look at the history of elementary educational buildings in Evanston. From the first one room schoolhouse on Ridge Avenue, through innovative designs by architects Daniel Burnham and Dwight Perkins, learn how Evanston’s school buildings have always reflected growth and change in our community.

About Kris Hartzell

Kris Hartzell is an architectural historian and preservation professional. She directs the conservation and restoration of the National Historic Landmark Charles Gates Dawes House, home of the Evanston History Center. She is also the curator of its collection of art, furnishings, and artifacts and oversees interpretation of the museum. She has co-authored two books on the historic built environment, Evanston: 150 Years, 150 Places and Evanston’s Design Heritage, written countless articles and exhibition guides, speaks regularly to the public and conducts a popular series of architectural walking tours.
