Dr. Dorene Wiese is an enrolled member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe–White Earth and a lifelong educator, leader, and cultural advocate. She holds a doctorate in Leadership and Policy Studies from Northern Illinois University and is the founding president of the American Indian Association of Illinois. Dr. Wiese currently serves as president of NAES College Inc., which was the only urban-based American Indian college in Illinois. A past Newberry Library Fellow, she co-directed the library’s first Oral History project and curated the NAES College library and archives to preserve Native scholarship and voices. She is also the Artistic Director of the Black Hawk Dance and Performance Company, which has shared Native music and dance throughout Illinois for over 20 years. As a retired professor from NAES College and past adjunct at Eastern Illinois University, she has spent her career teaching and mentoring future generations. For more than two decades, Dr. Wiese has lectured across Illinois on Native history, oral traditions, film, media, and cultural policy, building bridges of understanding through scholarship, performance, and community engagement. This Walking Tour is based on the Design Evanston book Hidden in Plain Sight: Evanston's Double Houses published in 2025. It will cover the unique architecture of double houses in the south-central area of Evanston's Lakeshore Historic District. Highlights include the iconic Carter House by Walter Burley Griffin, the Linthicum House by Tallmadge & Watson, and the Ballard House by John Van Bergen. The tour begins at the Evanston History Center and goes south to Lee Street and back. Led by Kris Hartzell.

Guitarist Donovan Mixon is a self-described citizen of the world. In 1988, then a Berklee College of Music professor, he was awarded an NEA grant for jazz composition. His artistic journey led to an 18-year residency in Europe, primarily in Italy and Turkey, where he performed at music festivals such as the Umbria and Istanbul jazz festivals and taught concepts from his unique method 'Performance Ear Training' at music schools and universities such as DAMS in Bologna Italia and Istanbul Bilgi University. Since 2010, Chicago has been his creative hub where he performs in clubs, concert halls and festivals with his World Jazz Quintet as well as with the GBME--Great Black Music Ensemble—of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) of which he is a recent inductee. Mixon curates monthly jazz performances with a series called "Donovan’s Garage" a unique performance laboratory located in N. Evanston. His latest recording, 'Finding Center' is set for prerelease in May 2025. It features all original compositions, fellow AACM members Fred Jackson Jr, Leon Q Allen and other instrumentalists such as Robert Irving III, Charles Heath, Emmanuel Ngolle, Cory Biggerstaff and the splendid voice of Sarah Marie Young.

Kimberly Grzesek is a lingerie designer and entrepreneur who transitioned from the world of clinical psychology research and academia to explore women’s experiences through clothing and design. She is the founder of Bella Otér, a lingerie and loungewear boutique and creative community space in downtown Evanston. Her work explores intimate apparel and clothing as a lens for understanding women’s identity, movement, confidence, and changing roles across generations. Through design, historical research, and community programming, Kimberly brings together her background in psychology with her interest in women’s social history to examine how what women wear reflects the cultural expectations, freedoms, and experiences of their time.

While Evanstonians may be familiar with some of the facts and legends about Frances Willard and the WCTU, this Curiosity Café will explore some aspects of the WCTU that make it of interest to us today. It is inspired by a new book, “The White Ribbon Army Reconsidered: The WCTU after 150 years” (University Press of Kansas) that addresses different aspects of the WCTU’s work and examines the organization’s complexities and contradictions. Scroll down to RSVP In-person event At the Evanston History Center 225 Greenwood Evanston, IL The struggle for disability rights conjures images of protestors waving signs, banging drums, and occupying government buildings. But a largely unheralded element in the disability rights movement concerns the role of parents - mothers in particular - in quietly standing up for their intellectually disabled children. In Chicago and the North Shore, in the 1960s and 1970s, mothers increasingly refused their doctors’ advice to send their sons and daughters away to far-off institutions. Instead, they called for integration and acceptance in churches, schools, and clubs and associations right here at home. In doing so, they helped drive a historic change in public attitudes toward disability. This talk looks at the struggles and achievements of parents of intellectually disabled children in this period of change and relates it to the larger challenge of creating a culture of tolerance and human rights in Evanston and worldwide. Warren Rosenblum is a professor of history at Webster University in St. Louis and a proud Evanston native. He has published widely on the history of social reform and has taught the History of Disability in various unlikely spots around the world. He was recently a Fulbright Scholar at the Catholic University in Belgium and currently serves on the board of Shore Community Services. Presented in collaboration with Shore Community Services in its 75th anniversary year.

About the artist La Caccina champions and performs diverse, innovative repertoire for women’s voices to engage audiences and inspire the next generation of collaborative musicians. The ensemble finds its namesake in Francesca Caccini, a prolific Baroque composer known for her virtuosic musicality and beautiful singing voice. Following in Caccini’s footsteps, the singers of La Caccina bring a wide range of expertise to the ensemble, enabling them to adapt to a variety of musical styles—from Renaissance madrigals to South African folk songs, and from contemporary pop songs to classical masterworks such as Vivaldi’s Gloria in D and Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Since their founding, La Caccina has collaborated with ensembles including the Pavo String Quartet, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra, and bluegrass trio Glass Mountain, and has commissioned and premiered works by Marie-Claire Saindon, Timothy C. Takach, Augusta Read Thomas, Matthew Harris, and Melissa Dunphy, among others. From romantic love to familial love to friendship to self-love – or even if your attitude is “down with love!” – La Caccina has you covered. Featuring Matthew Harris’s hilarious and poignant Women in Love, Megan Fletcher’s sassy arrangement of Chappell Roan’s “My Kink is Karma”, and a world premiere about the power of friendship from Venezuelan composer Mariana Romero Serra, this light-hearted program will have audiences feeling butterflies. Modern Love will also include a world premiere from our Hearing in Color Young Composer-in-Residence, Jaden Hart. Before the concert join us for an exclusive pre-show talkback with Jaden and LaRob K. Rafael, Artistic Director of Hearing in Color. Concert ticket includes admission to the Dawes House Museum and exhibitions. About the artist La Caccina champions and performs diverse, innovative repertoire for women’s voices to engage audiences and inspire the next generation of collaborative musicians. The ensemble finds its namesake in Francesca Caccini, a prolific Baroque composer known for her virtuosic musicality and beautiful singing voice. Following in Caccini’s footsteps, the singers of La Caccina bring a wide range of expertise to the ensemble, enabling them to adapt to a variety of musical styles—from Renaissance madrigals to South African folk songs, and from contemporary pop songs to classical masterworks such as Vivaldi’s Gloria in D and Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols. Since their founding, La Caccina has collaborated with ensembles including the Pavo String Quartet, the DuPage Symphony Orchestra, and bluegrass trio Glass Mountain, and has commissioned and premiered works by Marie-Claire Saindon, Timothy C. Takach, Augusta Read Thomas, Matthew Harris, and Melissa Dunphy, among others. No matter the music, La Caccina’s expressive, emotional singing highlights the versatility of the treble voice and brings musical excellence, integrity, and honesty to every performance.
