Come to the Dawes House for coffee, lunch, and informal conversation around a variety of unique Evanston History topics. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch; coffee and tea will be provided.

<strong>October's topic is: Uncorking the Women's Christian Temperance Union</strong>

Curious about that modest, historic-landmarked Victorian home at 1730 Chicago Avenue? Did you know that it was once the busy center of a global woman’s reform organization, the largest of its time?

Yes- it’s the former HQ of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The WCTU’s wide scope stretched well beyond anti-alcohol activism, and well beyond the U.S. It included many areas of social reform (woman suffrage, prison reform, health education, pure food and drug laws) aimed at empowering women to gain more control over their lives and their families’ wellbeing.

While Evanstonians may be familiar with some of the facts and legends about Frances Willard and the WCTU, this Curiosity Café will explore some aspects of the WCTU that
make it of interest to us today. It is inspired by a new book, “The White Ribbon Army Reconsidered: The WCTU after 150 years” (University Press of Kansas) that addresses different aspects of the WCTU’s work and examines the organization’s complexities and contradictions.

Presenter Janet Olson, a co-editor of the new book, is retired Assistant University Archivist at
Northwestern, and currently a volunteer in the Evanston History Center’s Research Room.

<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

What can intimate wear tell us about the lives of women across generations? This historical presentation explores how corsets, bras, lingerie, and changing undergarments reflected evolving ideas about women’s bodies, movement, femininity, and freedom from the 1920s to today. Through the lens of Evanston’s history of women’s education, civic engagement, and cultural life, the program looks at the often unseen relationship between what women wore underneath their clothing and the changing roles they occupied in public and private life. The presentation invites audiences to see intimate wear not simply as fashion, but as a revealing record of women’s lived experiences and social change across the last century.

Guests are invited to arrive beginning at 6pm to view the related Vive La Garçonne historic fashion exhibit on the second floor.

Kimberly Grzesek is a lingerie designer and entrepreneur who transitioned from the world of clinical psychology research and academia to explore women’s experiences through clothing and design. She is the founder of Bella Otér, a lingerie and loungewear boutique and creative community space in downtown Evanston. Her work explores intimate apparel and clothing as a lens for understanding women’s identity, movement, confidence, and changing roles across generations. Through design, historical research, and community programming, Kimberly brings together her background in psychology with her interest in women’s social history to examine how what women wear reflects the cultural expectations, freedoms, and experiences of their time.

DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

Donovan's Garage is a performance laboratory where jazz artists create spontaneous improvisations from standards and original compositions. The series, initiated and led by Donovan Mixon and performed by his invited guests, <i>different each month</i>, invites audiences behind the curtain of the creative process, allowing them to witness musical ideas as they emerge, evolve, and take shape in real time. The series began in Mixon’s own garage during the pandemic in 2020 before becoming a regular public series at AKAR Auditorium in 2023. It is now making its home at the Dawes House for the 2026–27 season.

Donovan’s Garage remains a free-admission, independently produced series sustained largely by the generosity of its audience. The Evanston History Center provides the home for this residency, while audience donations help pay the musicians and cover the production costs that make each event possible. Audience members are encouraged to donate a suggested $20 per person or a donation of their choice to Donovan's Garage in cash or Venmo at the show to support these talented musicians.

Admission includes entrance to the Dawes House museum and exhibits.

<strong>Please note: </strong>Due to limited capacity, RSVP is highly recommended. Patrons who have RSVPd are asked to arrive by 6:45pm to secure their spot. Walk-ins will be welcome after 6:45pm if there are seats available.

<strong>About Donovan Mixon:</strong>
<p class="guide-single-details">Guitarist Donovan Mixon is a self-described citizen of the world. In 1988, then a Berklee College of Music professor, he was awarded an NEA grant for jazz composition. His artistic journey led to an 18-year residency in Europe, primarily in Italy and Turkey, where he performed at music festivals such as the Umbria and Istanbul jazz festivals and taught concepts from his unique method 'Performance Ear Training' at music schools and universities such as DAMS in Bologna Italia and Istanbul Bilgi University. Since 2010, Chicago has been his creative hub where he performs in clubs, concert halls and festivals with his World Jazz Quintet as well as with the GBME--Great Black Music Ensemble—of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) of which he is a recent inductee. Mixon curates monthly jazz performances with a series called "Donovan’s Garage" a unique performance laboratory located in N. Evanston. His latest recording, 'Finding Center' is set for prerelease in May 2025. It features all original compositions, fellow AACM members Fred Jackson Jr, Leon Q Allen and other instrumentalists such as Robert Irving III, Charles Heath, Emmanuel Ngolle, Cory Biggerstaff and the splendid voice of Sarah Marie Young.</p>

This Walking Tour is based on the Design Evanston book <a href="https://www.designevanston.org/design-evanston/hidden-in-plain-sight-evanstons-double-houses/">Hidden in Plain Sight: Evanston's Double Houses</a> published in 2025. It will cover the unique architecture of double houses in the south-central area of Evanston's Lakeshore Historic District. Highlights include the iconic Carter House by Walter Burley Griffin, the Linthicum House by Tallmadge &amp; Watson, and the Ballard House by John Van Bergen. The tour begins at the Evanston History Center and goes south to Lee Street and back. Led by Kris Hartzell.

DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

DESCRIPTION:<p class="p1" style="text-align: center;">The Evanston History Center’s Archival Collection is extensive and offers a comprehensive view of Evanston over time.</p>
<p class="p1" style="text-align: center;">The archives hold a significant amount of material related to people and houses in Evanston. In addition, our staff has years of experience interpreting the primary sources and assisting people with figuring out the stories of their families and their homes.</p>
