DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

Come to the Dawes House for coffee, lunch, and informal conversation around a variety of unique Evanston History topics. Feel free to bring a brown bag lunch; coffee and tea will be provided.

<strong>October's topic is: Uncorking the Women's Christian Temperance Union</strong>

Curious about that modest, historic-landmarked Victorian home at 1730 Chicago Avenue? Did you know that it was once the busy center of a global woman’s reform organization, the largest of its time?

Yes- it’s the former HQ of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The WCTU’s wide scope stretched well beyond anti-alcohol activism, and well beyond the U.S. It included many areas of social reform (woman suffrage, prison reform, health education, pure food and drug laws) aimed at empowering women to gain more control over their lives and their families’ wellbeing.

While Evanstonians may be familiar with some of the facts and legends about Frances Willard and the WCTU, this Curiosity Café will explore some aspects of the WCTU that
make it of interest to us today. It is inspired by a new book, “The White Ribbon Army Reconsidered: The WCTU after 150 years” (University Press of Kansas) that addresses different aspects of the WCTU’s work and examines the organization’s complexities and contradictions.

Presenter Janet Olson, a co-editor of the new book, is retired Assistant University Archivist at
Northwestern, and currently a volunteer in the Evanston History Center’s Research Room.

<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>

DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>

The struggle for disability rights conjures images of protestors waving signs, banging drums, and occupying government buildings.  But a largely unheralded element in the disability rights movement concerns the role of parents - mothers in particular - in quietly standing up for their intellectually disabled children. In Chicago and the North Shore, in the 1960s and 1970s, mothers increasingly refused their doctors’ advice to send their sons and daughters away to far-off institutions. Instead, they called for integration and acceptance in churches, schools, and clubs and associations right here at home. In doing so, they helped drive a historic change in public attitudes toward disability.

This talk looks at the struggles and achievements of parents of intellectually disabled children in this period of change and relates it to the larger challenge of creating a culture of tolerance and human rights in Evanston and worldwide.

<strong><img class="wp-image-18432 alignleft" src="https://evanstonhistorycenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Rosenblum-238x300.jpeg" alt="" width="126" height="159" />Warren Rosenblum</strong> is a professor of history at Webster University in St. Louis and a proud Evanston native. He has published widely on the history of social reform and has taught the History of Disability in various unlikely spots around the world. He was recently a Fulbright Scholar at the Catholic University in Belgium and currently serves on the board of Shore Community Services.

DESCRIPTION:<p style="text-align: center;">Step into the home of Former U.S. Vice President, ambassador to Great Britain, and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Charles Gates Dawes.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.</p>
<p style="text-align: center;">Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.</p>
