Charles Gates Dawes’ magnificent home, now a National Historic Landmark, was built by Dr. Robert Sheppard in 1894 on two acres overlooking Lake Michigan. It served as the Dawes family home from 1909 until 1957.
Faithfully restored and carefully conserved, this chateauesque residence, designed by architect Henry Edwards-Ficken, of New York, has twenty-five rooms, including a cherry paneled library, a vaulted dining room with a musicians’ gallery, six bedrooms, and twelve fireplaces.

reFashioning History is back! Evanston History Center invited professional and non-professional designers from Chicagoland to take their inspiration from our extensive, historically significant costume collection and create a new look of their own. Winning creations will be showcased on the evening of Thursday, September 18, 2025, beginning at 7:00 PM. Guests will be treated to a preview of the new fashion exhibition, followed by a fashion showcase that offers the opportunity to hear directly from featured designers about their processes and interpretations - all while enjoying music and elegant refreshments on the historic lakefront terrace and interior of the Dawes House.
