Talks@EHC: Newspaper Memory Project

February 19 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

With the recent addition of 15 years of Evanston RoundTable content, the Evanston Public Library’s digitized historical newspaper archive has grown to twelve titles going back to the Evanston Index in 1872. Of special note are the digital archives of Evanston’s Black newspapers. It’s searchable from home, office, or anywhere in the world, and represents a revolution in genealogy research, property and small business research, as well as general historical research with an Evanston focus. A day in the life of Charles Gates Dawes or Lorraine Morton? The debate surrounding the demolition of Northwestern’s Ryan Field from different perspectives? Historical information on your home, family or business? These and more topics can be explored, all you need is an EPL library card. Join representatives of three important Evanston memory institutions to hear about how the public can use this resource for different real life situations.

About the presenters:

Jeffrey Garrett retired from his post as Associate University Librarian for Special Libraries at Northwestern in 2014. After helping his wife set up Bookends & Beginnings as an independent bookstore in downtown Evanston that same year, Jeff joined the staff of Evanston Public Library as an adult services librarian in 2017.

Grace Lehner is the Archivist of the Evanston History Center.  Grace has a graduate degree in Public History from Loyola University and a graduate degree in Library and Information Science from Dominican University.

Morris (Dino) Robinson, Jr., production Manager at Northwestern University Press and founder of Shorefront, where he has authored books, facilitated subject specific speaking engagements and exhibits, consults on community based archiving, organizing, and programming, and has built a growing collection representing the local Black communities on Chicago’s suburban North Shore.
